🇨🇦 Buy Canadian, get governed from Ohio
An Ohio CEO buys Stelco, backs U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, threatens Ottawa in court, lays off up to 500 Hamilton workers, then calls himself a good citizen in Canada. That is the globalized model in one neat package. Lourenco Goncalves says tariffs wrecked Stelco while also cheering Section 232 for reviving American steel. Funny how Canada is always expected to keep markets open, surrender strategic industry, and smile while our jobs get hollowed out. Even his sale pitch is blunt: for a good offer, yes, as reported.
And Ottawa wants applause for acting shocked. Mélanie Joly and Mark Carney approved a foreign takeover under the usual fantasy that paper undertakings protect national interests. They do not. They hand leverage to foreign capital and leave Canadians begging bureaucrats to enforce clauses after the plant is already on the chopping block. This is what sovereignty erosion looks like in practice: strategic assets sold off, workers discarded, and Canada treated like a branch plant with a flag.
