🇨🇦 Ontario hospitals owed private banks $70 million last year — and one wasn't sure it could even keep operating

Here’s the civilized, world-class system Ontario keeps bragging about: hospitals borrowing from private banks just to keep the lights on, while taxpayer money gets siphoned into interest payments instead of beds, nurses, or actual care. At least $1.45 million from just eight hospital networks went straight to bank interest, and one hospital openly raised doubt about whether it could continue operating, as reported. So much for the pious managerial class and its endless talk about efficiency, resilience, and responsible stewardship.

The real scandal is not that hospitals use credit. It’s that a province with a massive bureaucracy and endless ideological vanity projects leaves core infrastructure to beg lenders for oxygen. Eighty of 129 hospital networks ran deficits. Twelve boosted borrowing capacity by close to $460 million. Officials stayed mute. Of course they did. This is what late-stage Trudeau-era governance looks like at every level: services collapsing, secrecy expanding, and the public paying twice, once in taxes and again in debt servicing. Sovereignty starts at home, and a government that cannot keep hospitals solvent without enriching banks is not serious about governing Canada.
