🇨🇦 $73,000 stolen from a mentally ill client, and the system still tried to go soft
An Edmonton housing worker drained more than $73,000 from a vulnerable 59-year-old man, sent 61 e-transfers, helped herself to his online banking, then invented a fake employee to cover it up, as reported. Shum Shabat Yousouf got 12 months. Defence lawyers actually wanted a conditional sentence, because apparently looting a mentally ill man’s life savings while posing as his helper is now something the therapeutic justice crowd thinks can be handled from the couch.
The real scandal is the ecosystem that let this happen. A thinly supervised non-profit, Contentment Social Services Foundation, was so broke it started feeding off the client. Fifty-seven transfers worth $63,445 went into the organization’s account, plus $10,650 to a property company, while the man’s rent still went unpaid and he faced eviction. That is the Trudeau-era NGO state in miniature: moral posturing up front, rotten incentives in the back office, and the vulnerable treated like ATMs.
