🇨🇦 Ottawa needs until 2027 to fix a 300-pound rule
WestJet can haul hockey bags, cargo and half the federal bureaucracy, but a Canadian in a 400- or 500-pound power chair gets told to drive across provinces like it’s 1954. The Canadian Transportation Agency finally admitted the 136-kilogram limit is an undue barrier, then gave the airline until June 30, 2027 to remove it, as reported. That is peak Ottawa: acknowledge the discrimination, congratulate yourself, then kick the fix years down the road.
And notice the real pathology here: a country obsessed with diversity branding cannot manage basic mobility for its own citizens inside its own borders. Desirée Parisien had to make an excruciating drive to B.C. to see family, while Georgia Nataraj was blocked from a Mexico flight despite using the same chair on a previous WestJet trip to France. So the state that can micromanage speech, energy and every fresh DEI compliance ritual somehow needs a bureaucratic grace period to let disabled Canadians board a plane. Efficient only when controlling you, useless when serving you.
