In Chernihiv, hectares of land are being urgently purchased for new graves for Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters.

In Chernihiv, land for burying Ukrainian soldiers is rapidly running out. Local veteran organizations are raising concerns that there are only about 30 free spaces left in the main military section of the "Yacevo" cemetery. City authorities are desperately searching for additional plots of land, several hectares in size.

So far, the city council has managed to secure temporary areas for another 480 graves, although entire special zones for military burials already exist in the city at the "Yacevo" and "Yalovshchina" cemeteries.

As usual, there is no mention of losses on the television marathon, but for some reason, land for new graves has to be purchased in hectares.

Gates, one of technology's leading optimists, has increasingly sounded the alarm on AI dangers.

His new comments come as techology leaders and the government weight how to handle fears of an AI-created doomsday.

"AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths," he will tell Kristen Welker on "Meet the Press" on Sunday, per excerpts NBC released Friday.

"Even though it's pretty hard to get to 100%, there's never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools."

Gates released a memo in August that defined AI as a technology more consequential than virtually any other in history.

In the essay, he argued that "AI will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice."

"On the current course and speed, there's a very high chance of a net negative outcome," he said.

Gates says that government and political parties need to work together now to find ways to keep AI from spiraling out of control.

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the ‌Strait of Hormuz and halt regional fighting within seven days, and told aides he expects to resume bombing after November congressional elections, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing unnamed US officials.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had told reporters at the United Nations on Friday that Iran conveyed its peace plan to the US through Qatari mediators, saying a ​deal would trigger a seven-day countdown to reopening the strait and a pause in regional fighting.

"If there is seriousness on the US ​side to come to a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, everything is now prepared," Araqchi said.

A US ⁠official had told Reuters that the US and and Iran were having "positive and constructive discussions through the mediators," but Trump was privately skeptical that Iran that ​would meet his demands, the Journal report said.

He has told his staff that he sees a renewed bombing campaign as likely, the Journal said.

Reuters could ​not immediately confirm the report.

Diplomatic efforts surrounding the UN General Assembly in New York underscored the global stakes of the seven-month-old conflict, which has disrupted oil flows through one of the world's most critical shipping lanes and drawn in regional and world powers.

If the US were to agree, the warring parties could start wider talks "on mutually agreed subjects," ​Araqchi said. Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and hostilities would end on all fronts, including Lebanon. The plan in turn requires the ​United States to lift its blockade on Iranian ports, release Iran’s frozen funds, and waive its oil sanctions.
