How a Dream Became Reality

In this post, we’d like to take another look at our service — to remind our long-time users and show new users why Litera Reader isn’t just another “reading app,” but something more.

🧐 So we asked one of our colleagues: “What does Litera Reader — and working on it — mean to you?”

Their answer takes us back to their university years, when one of the biggest challenges was keeping all study materials in one place and being able to open them within a single application. Each file format seemed to require its own app.

Every time they needed to open a file, it felt like a gamble: Which app should I use? Would the file even open? Would the app freeze?

It would have been so much easier to just open any file in the browser — without multiple apps, installations, or unnecessary hassle.

And now, that dream has become a reality. Today, this person is part of the team developing and improving Litera Reader for you.

How we plan updates — and why September matters

In the first part of 2026, we released a major update and introduced new features in Litera Reader. Naturally, the next question is: what comes next, and when?

Curiosity is a good thing — so let us share how the product development process works.

🍁 Planning starts in September

Each September, the team meets in one city to plan the year ahead. Why September? Summer is typically a time for vacations, and it is easier to return with fresh energy and focus.

We begin with high-level directions and then break them down into epics and specific tasks.

📌 How releases are structured

Each release cycle lasts three months. For every release, we aim to balance different areas of work — for example, new features, performance improvements, and overall stability.

What influences priorities

Priorities depend on the current stage of the product and, importantly, on your feedback.

We carefully analyze product metrics and focus on building features that are truly relevant.

That is why your feedback plays a key role — it helps shape updates that actually matter.

🙌 Room for new ideas

At the same time, some ideas emerge unexpectedly and move into development ahead of schedule.

For example, Impressions started as such an idea. It has the potential to fundamentally improve how quotes are structured and understood.

Some of the most valuable solutions come not from strict planning, but from recognizing the right opportunity at the right time — and we aim not to miss those moments.

We’ve been building this system for a long time

Let’s continue the conversation about Impressions. We’ve already shared a lot, but it’s important to emphasize that this is not just another feature — it represents a meaningful step in the evolution of Litera Reader.

It is designed to bring value to individual users, the community, and the service as a whole.

We believe that Impressions help you navigate your quotes more effectively. As the number of saved passages grows, it becomes important not only to store them, but to quickly find what matters.

With Impressions, your collection of quotes becomes structured and easier to work with.

Impressions also make it easier to understand quotes created by others.

Now you can see why a passage was highlighted. Instead of just seeing an avatar in the margin, you see intent: one reader marked a passage as a key point, another disagreed, and someone else wanted to start a discussion.

Imagine opening a book and looking for the most impactful passages — the ones that resonated with other readers. Or exploring which ideas are most often challenged.

Now this can be done using filters.

With a single click, you can view all passages marked as
💎 Masterpiece! or 🚫 Disagree. There is no need to search through pages — the system brings them together for you.

🎯 Our goal

We believe Impressions make reading not only more convenient, but also more meaningful. You are no longer an isolated reader — you become part of an ongoing conversation around the book.

Each book is revealed more fully through different perspectives, opinions, and reactions from other readers.

We have introduced the current set of Impressions, but the work does not stop here.

We continue to develop the social features of Litera Reader. In the upcoming update, you will see new ways to interact with both content and other users.

What’s coming next?

❤️ Likes for quotes — a simple way to show that a passage resonates with you, and an important signal for us to understand what content matters to the community.

💭 Comments on quotes — you will be able to leave comments directly under other users’ quotes. This will make discussions more structured and easier to follow.

🔔 Reply notifications — if someone responds to your comment, you will receive a notification so you don’t miss the conversation.

Why does this matter?

Our goal is to show you more relevant quotes. Likes and comments help us better understand what content is valuable to the community. Over time, the activity feed will more accurately reflect what users find meaningful.

Evolution of your quotes

Today, we want to introduce Impressions — the next step in the evolution of quotes that many of you already use.

Before that, let’s briefly look back at how it all started.

When we first introduced social features in Litera Reader, the foundation was quotes.

🟢 You read, highlight a passage, and it is saved to a dedicated panel. Colors could be used to organize quotes — for example, red for important ideas, green for passages that raise questions. This created a simple personal system.

Later, we introduced the ability to see other users’ quotes. However, their color choices remained private — only avatars appeared in the margins, since colors can carry different meanings for different users.

Over time, the number of quotes in our system exceeded one million. At that point, it became important to organize them in a more structured and meaningful way.

This led to Impressions — a set of tags that reflect why a passage was highlighted.

Here is how they are currently structured:

🎯 Key point — ideas, definitions, or conclusions worth returning to.

💎 Masterpiece! — passages with exceptional depth or quality.

🖋 Poetic — expressive language, vivid imagery, and memorable phrasing.

🤔 Thought-Provoking — passages that challenge your thinking or offer a new perspective.

💬 Let’s Discuss — ideas worth sharing and discussing with others.

🚫 Disagree — points where your perspective differs from the author’s.

⚠️ Mistake — factual inaccuracies, typos, or outdated information.

📝 Others — any quotes that does not fit the categories above.

We would like to highlight Let’s Discuss in particular. In future updates, passages marked with this tag will be visually emphasized as invitations to discussion. Other users will be able to respond and share their perspectives directly.

Reader’s Corner

We continue to collect your questions and feedback, and today we’d like to take a closer look at a few topics that come up especially often.
Here, we’ve gathered some of them. What you can already do in LITERA Reader, and which ideas we’re planning to develop next.

Visibility of other users’ quotes and notes

You asked whether it’s possible to read a book without seeing quotes and notes added by other readers.
Our team is currently working on improving this experience by introducing more flexible controls, so you’ll be able to choose to see only your own quotes if you prefer.
That said, this option is already partially available. In the Social Activity panel 👥, you can switch between two modes:

All — shows all quotes and notes

Mine — shows only your own

This way, you can easily switch between a more social reading experience and a more private, distraction-free one.

Highlight colors

Many of you have asked for more highlight colors. We do plan to expand this feature but in a more thoughtful way.
Highlights are now connected not just to color, but to meaning: why you marked a quote and what role it plays for you.
This update is already live and we’ll share more details about how it works in our next post.

Bookmarks

At first, we thought highlighting a quote could also serve as a way to remember a place.
But we see that many of you want a separate, clear bookmark feature.
We hear you and bookmarks are also planned for this year.

Text-to-speech

Reading aloud (text-to-speech) is another frequent request.
It’s already on our roadmap, and our team is working toward bringing it to LITERA soon.

File storage

We also plan to introduce file storage, so your books and documents are accessible from any device you use.

Themes and visual modes

You’ve also written to us about additional backgrounds, softer contrast, and visual elements that help keep track of your reading.

Never Lose Your Place
Wherever You Read.

Hello book lovers!
Let’s talk about one important option in Litera Reader — the way it remembers where you left off.

When you read across different devices: at home, at work, or on your phone — it’s easy to lose track of your place. Litera has solved that problem.

Previously, the reader would simply open your book at the last page you read. Convenient, yes — but not always ideal. Now the system remembers not just your last position, but also the previous one, so you never lose context even when switching between devices.

How it works.

When you open a book in the same browser and on the same device, Litera brings you back exactly to the page where you left off.

But if you open that same book on another device (or in a different browser), Litera will take you to the page where you last read there. And! show a pop-up suggesting to continue from your most recent reading position, if it was on another device.

So, Litera doesn’t rely on page numbers alone. It remembers your last action: where you were reading, highlighting, or scrolling through the text.

Litera simply makes sure your books stay right with you. Open, close, switch devices — your place is always saved, so you can keep reading without missing a beat.
All in all, it’s super handy to use!

And behind the scenes, our developers are already going full speed on new features.

We’re continuing to evolve the platform to make your time with books not just comfortable, but truly engaging.
Every update is shaped by your feedback — helping you see the text more clearly, interact with it more easily, and enjoy the process even more.
This time, you can see it in action in the book with vibrant, colorful illustrations (the video) — and, as always, we’ve marked key details with bright red arrows for clarity (screenshots).

Now you can instantly see where each quote is located in the book.

Previously, when you clicked a quote in the Social Activity panel (👥), a small marker appeared in the top navigation bar — showing where it was located in the text.
Now that marker is larger and easier to notice. Its color matches the quote, and when you hover over it in the Social Activity panel (👥), the marker on the navigation bar slightly expands, helping you instantly locate the exact passage.
This makes it faster to move through the book and return to your favorite moments — without losing context.

In the bottom right corner, you’ll now find icons for our social media channels — an easy way to stay updated on everything new.

Today we’re bringing you a small but handy update in LITERA Reader.

We’ve made it easier to interact with quotes and notes right in the book content:

If a quote has a note, just click the corner marker ◤ (placed at the beginning of the quote, right before the first word) — and it will take you straight to that quote in the Social Activity panel 👥.

Double-click the corner marker, and you can immediately edit the attached note.
Simple gestures that save time and keep your reading even more comfortable.
Click. Edit. Done.
(At the moment, corner markers are available in the web version of LITERA Reader. Support for mobile is on our list and coming later.)
