Evolution of your quotes

Today, we want to introduce Impressions — the next step in the evolution of quotes that many of you already use.

Before that, let’s briefly look back at how it all started.

When we first introduced social features in Litera Reader, the foundation was quotes.

🟢 You read, highlight a passage, and it is saved to a dedicated panel. Colors could be used to organize quotes — for example, red for important ideas, green for passages that raise questions. This created a simple personal system.

Later, we introduced the ability to see other users’ quotes. However, their color choices remained private — only avatars appeared in the margins, since colors can carry different meanings for different users.

Over time, the number of quotes in our system exceeded one million. At that point, it became important to organize them in a more structured and meaningful way.

This led to Impressions — a set of tags that reflect why a passage was highlighted.

Here is how they are currently structured:

🎯 Key point — ideas, definitions, or conclusions worth returning to.

💎 Masterpiece! — passages with exceptional depth or quality.

🖋 Poetic — expressive language, vivid imagery, and memorable phrasing.

🤔 Thought-Provoking — passages that challenge your thinking or offer a new perspective.

💬 Let’s Discuss — ideas worth sharing and discussing with others.

🚫 Disagree — points where your perspective differs from the author’s.

⚠️ Mistake — factual inaccuracies, typos, or outdated information.

📝 Others — any quotes that does not fit the categories above.

We would like to highlight Let’s Discuss in particular. In future updates, passages marked with this tag will be visually emphasized as invitations to discussion. Other users will be able to respond and share their perspectives directly.
