Let’s start this workweek with
another coffee-related story, this time about a startup that was born in 1946, when two comrades, Cyrus Melikian and Lloyd Rudd, who had served together in the U.S. Air Force, returned home and founded the company Rudd-Melikian, Inc. Legend has it that, back in 1944, Melikian was craving for a cup of coffee at the post exchange, but was told that coffee was not served between meals. Instead, he was offered a bottle of cold lemonade from a vending machine instead. “I thought to myself, 'Wouldn't it be great if you could get hot coffee that way, from a vending machine? Then you could have it at any time, day or night. I looked into it and discovered that a vending machine serving hot beverages simply did not exist at that time.”
Upon returning to Philadelphia, the two friends did what every innovative startup does - they borrowed the money from family, friends, and fools and set up a workshop in the Melikian family garage. In 1946, they created the world’s first coffee vending machine. Called Kwik Kafe, this machine would fill a paper cup with coffee in just five seconds for five cents, mixing boiling water, liquid coffee concentrate, cream, and sugar. Notably, the very first model, which was assembled manually, allowed customers to adjust the taste by controlling the amount of sugar and cream. Soon, orders started flooding in, production was scaled up, and the machines began spreading rapidly across the country. By 1948, the company proudly reported that it was selling 250,000 cups of coffee every day…
