Why Children and Teenagers Should Never Drink Energy Drinks

Energy drinks contain a mix of stimulants: glucose, caffeine, taurine, guarana, amino acids such as L-carnitine, and B vitamins. Brands like Red Bull, Monster, and Burn are increasingly popular among young people and children, drawn by the promise of energy and euphoria in a few sips. They should be distinguished from sports drinks, which are designed mainly to rehydrate with mineral salts during physical activity and, at least on paper, contain no caffeine or taurine. Even sports drinks, however, contain sugars, flavorings, and colorings that act on the nervous system and can have a stimulating effect.

Italy Records an Average of 311 Environmental Violations a Day

Italy recorded an average of 311 environmental violations per day in 2025, counting both crimes and administrative offenses. The total reached 113,630 (13 per hour), while the turnover of the “ecomafias” (organized crime groups profiting from environmental offenses such as illegal waste disposal and illegal construction) rose to €11.5 billion (about $13.4 billion), a full €2.2 billion (about $2.6 billion) more than the previous year.

Forty Towns in Italy’s Cuneo Province Move Water Service to Fully Public Operator

Since Thursday, October 1, residents of forty municipalities in the province of Cuneo who need to request a connection, dispute a bill, or report a fault no longer deal with a company belonging to the Iren group, a publicly traded multiutility, but with their town hall. In Piazza Risorgimento, the counters of Cogesi have opened. Cogesi is a consortium company with entirely public capital, and from that day it has replaced Egea Acque as the provider of water services, while customer contracts are transferred to the new operator automatically, with no forms or signatures required from users. “The water cycle will be fully public, in both control and management,” said the mayor, Alberto Gatto.

Criticizing ENI Is Off Limits: Italy’s Oil Giant Threatens a Lawyer Over Instagram Videos

Commenting on a energy giant’s commercial strategy on social media can now cost you a demand to delete your content and publish a retraction negotiated with the company. That is what happened to Rome-based lawyer Riccardo Veli, who received a formal warning letter (a “diffida,” a pre-litigation legal notice) from ENI, Italy’s state-controlled oil and gas group, after posting three videos on his Instagram account about the fuel price cap and the discount on utility bills.

Pro-Palestine Protests Took Place in 50 Italian Cities

Tens of thousands of people filled the streets of 50 Italian cities last Saturday, united by a single chant: “The end of the genocide is the end of Zionism.” The demonstrations renewed Italy’s solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are under siege in Gaza and the West Bank. From Milan to Palermo, by way of Rome and Naples, protesters called for “the immediate end of the genocide, the unblocking of aid, and the withdrawal of the occupying army,” according to the network of organizers: Giovani Palestinesi (Young Palestinians), the Arab-Palestinian Democratic Union (UDAP), the Association of Palestinians in Italy (API), and the Palestinian Students’ Movement.

Lombardy Residents Protest in Milan, Demanding a Freeze on Data Center Construction

Lombardy is, and intends to remain, Italy’s frontrunner in hosting hyperscale facilities, the powerful data centers built to run cloud services and artificial intelligence. Across the Atlantic, however, the construction of these facilities has caused serious problems for local residents, a precedent that has prompted citizens in several Lombard municipalities to raise a series of questions and to demand a moratorium suspending all work until a national plan subject to a Strategic Environmental Assessment (VAS, the EU-mandated environmental review applied to public plans and programs) is in place.

Warming Seas Are Emptying the World’s Largest Penguin Colony

For years, Zavodovski, an uninhabited island at the northern tip of the South Sandwich Islands, was home to the largest penguin colony on the planet, with more than a million birds. But a study just published in Current Biology by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has established that between 2011 and 2025, chinstrap penguins, the island’s dominant species, declined by 63 percent, falling from roughly 1.09 million breeding adults to 402,000. More than 680,000 animals vanished in fourteen years, and according to the scientists the cause is ocean warming and the resulting disappearance of krill, on which these penguins feed.

Five Months In, the Italian Government’s “Housing Plan” Has Not Produced a Single Home

Five months have passed since Giorgia Meloni’s government launched its Piano Casa (Housing Plan). The stated goal is to mobilize about €10 billion (roughly $11.6 billion) over ten years to make 100,000 homes available, split between public housing and below-market-rate units. “It is a plan that has been awaited for 50 years,” Matteo Salvini (Italy’s deputy prime minister and minister of infrastructure and transport, and leader of the right-wing League party) said proudly, speaking by video link at the opening of Saie, the international construction trade fair that opened in Bologna on Wednesday, October 7.

Italy Gives Final Approval to New Electoral Law

Italy’s new electoral law, pushed through by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, is now law. The new proportional system with a majority bonus, already nicknamed the “Stabilicum” (a play on the word “stability,” following the Italian habit of giving electoral laws Latin-sounding names), received final approval from the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of Italy’s Parliament) with 227 votes in favor.

In Europe, Italy's Government Voted No on a Windfall Tax on Oil Companies

Barely two weeks ago, Italy's Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti was touting the Italian government's efforts in European forums to push EU institutions to act on the windfall profits of oil giants. "I hope the rest of Europe wakes up too," he said, while Brussels pointed out to Italy that it could act on its own, using its own national tools. After the institutional buck-passing, the government has now shown its hand.

EU Pushes Startups Into the Arms Industry While Cutting Public Services

Encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, and scale-ups to develop "emerging and disruptive defence products," including adapting civilian technologies for military use, to meet the EU's need to speed up technological and military research, a field in which the European bloc lags well behind other powers: that is the core of the Agile and Rapid Defence Innovation Programme (AGILE), approved by members of the European Parliament on Tuesday, October 6.
