But a study just published in Current Biology by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has established that between 2011 and 2025, chinstrap penguins, the island’s dominant species, declined by 63 percent, falling from roughly 1.09 million breeding adults to 402,000. More than 680,000 animals vanished in fourteen years, and according to the scientists the cause is ocean warming and the resulting disappearance of krill, on which these penguins feed.
