Lombardy Residents Protest in Milan, Demanding a Freeze on Data Center Construction

Lombardy is, and intends to remain, Italy’s frontrunner in hosting hyperscale facilities, the powerful data centers built to run cloud services and artificial intelligence. Across the Atlantic, however, the construction of these facilities has caused serious problems for local residents, a precedent that has prompted citizens in several Lombard municipalities to raise a series of questions and to demand a moratorium suspending all work until a national plan subject to a Strategic Environmental Assessment (VAS, the EU-mandated environmental review applied to public plans and programs) is in place.
