📌 Tehran, IRNA – Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Major General Ali Abdollahi has hailed the nomination of Mehrdad Akhlaqi as the new minister of defense, arguing that he is a fitting choice for the post, given his experience within the country’s defense industry.
General Abdollahi made the remarks after reviewing the managerial experience and professional background of Akhlaghi, who met with the top military commander on Saturday to discuss requirements for strengthening defense capabilities and enhancing logistical support for the Armed Forces.
Highlighting the critical and sensitive nature of the Ministry of Defense’s mission to meet the needs of the Armed Forces, Gen. Abdollahi described Akhlaghi as well-qualified for the cabinet post, saying his experience meets the ministry's current conditions and requirements.
The top commander also emphasized the need to leverage domestic capacity for defense equipment and weaponry and to strengthen industrial infrastructure to enhance defense capabilities.
Pointing to the Ministry of Defense's strategic role in maintaining and enhancing the readiness of the Armed Forces, Abdollahi stressed the need for cohesive management, meticulous planning and optimal use of domestic expertise.
Akhlaghi, for his part, underscored the importance of sustained, effective support for the Armed Forces, highlighting several key priorities for the Ministry of Defense, including maintaining supply chain stability, producing defense equipment, advancing technological capabilities and strengthening welfare support for personnel.
President Masoud Pezeshkian has nominated Akhlaghi — a senior official at the Ministry of Defense and former head of the Aerospace Industries Organization — to serve as the country's Minister of Defense, submitting his name to Parliament for a vote of confidence scheduled for October 18.
