📌 Tehran, IRNA – The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has reported an explosion aboard a second supertanker following a collision with a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement on Saturday, the IRGC’s Public Relations office said the fire engulfed the engine room of the supertanker — carrying over 2 million barrels of crude oil — after a powerful explosion, leaving the vessel immobilized.
The statement did not give further details about the vessel, its crew, possible casualties or environmental damage.
The IRGC Navy said the tanker had switched off its positioning and radar systems while attempting to pass through an “unauthorized” route in the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, another supertanker met a similar fate while trying to transit the same route, despite repeated warnings for vessels to follow authorized routes in coordination with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
The IRGC accuses the US military of escalating maritime tensions by deceiving shipping and insurance companies and forcing them to sail through unauthorized routes, disrupting the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
