Syria's Energy Ministry said the price increase was temporary, caused by rising global prices and maintenance at the Baniyas refinery. Syria produces about 100,000 barrels per day, covering only a third of domestic demand.
Reports that demonstrators chanted for Assad's return are not confirmed by major sources. Protests in Daraa in August 2026 were anti-government, with chants against Assad. The September protests focused on fuel prices.
