|🔫| — 🔠ood evening, my, I confess, unknown reader.
I’m sitting on the porch, puffing my pipe, and thinking: how much longer must I endure this nonsense? Around our town, blast them, have settled these… what do you call them… moon gnomes. Small, about the size of a cat, with ears like bats and eyes like two saucers. And it’d be all right — let them live — but they’re as thick as two short planks!
Yesterday morning I goes out for firewood — and they’ve dug up all my garden beds. They stand there, grinning, pointing at their little shovels: “We wanted to help, good sir!” Help, blast it… I told them a hundred times: “Don’t touch my garden, or I’ll scoop you all into a sack and toss you in the river!” But they’re at it again.
And the day before, these same fools decided my well is a magic fountain that grants wishes. They threw in three rusty nails, a crow’s feather, and an old boot. And now they stand there, waiting for a miracle. I shout at them: “Fools, this is a well, not a fair of wonders!” And they answer me: “But that’s what they do in the tales!” In the tales, blast them… In the tales, dragons are kind and kings are just — but life’s different!
This morning I come to the shed — and there’s a whole delegation. The chief gnome, who calls himself a chieftain, steps forward and says: “O great warrior, teach us to fight! We wish to be heroes!” I nearly dropped my pipe. “Fight?” I says. “You’d scatter at the first shot! Better go pick mushrooms or sing songs — that’s what you’re good at.”
They got disappointed, but didn’t give up. One, the most stubborn, pulls out a stick and declares: “I shall be a knight! This is my sword!” I looked at the stick, then at him, then at the sky — and burst out laughing. “A sword,” I says, “is not a stick you picked up by the fence. A sword is steel, weight, and experience. With that thing you couldn’t even beat a mosquito.”
At last I’d had enough. “Listen here,” I tells them sternly, “one more prank — and I’ll call the forester. He’ll have you back in the woods where you belong in no time. Now — off with you, and I don’t want to see you for a week!” They drooped, whispered among themselves — and scattered every which way.
Now I sit here, smoking, and think: why did nature make creatures so naïve? War was simpler — there the enemy’s visible, shoots at you, and you shoot back. But this… Here the enemy is your own kindness, which won’t let you truly lose your temper with them. Blast those moon gnomes. But still, somewhere deep down… I feel a bit sorry for them.
