|🔫| — 🔠ood evening, my, I confess, unknown reader.
I’m sitting on the porch, scowling at an empty bottle — and thinking: I’d be better off giving that coin to a dog than to that scoundrel at the market.
Bought it, of course. Paid three silver coins — near as much as for a barrel of good ale. Brought it home, poured a glass: the colour — like someone spat chewed tobacco into water. The smell… Lord have mercy, it reeks as if apples rotted, yeast soured, and a mouse died in the same cask.
Took a sip — and nearly choked. It burns like acid, scrapes the throat, darkens the eyes. My stomach churns as if a company of raw recruits were brawling after supper. I cough, wipe the tears with my sleeve: “Well, Jack,” I says to myself, “you old fool. Caught again by a market charlatan’s sweet talk.”
Set the glass down, went to the shed, fetched my treasured canteen — still got some whiskey left, the kind my sergeant gave me back at Yorktown. Now that’s a drink! Not some muck, but true fire: smooth, with a hint of smoke, warms the soul and the body.
And this “cognac”… I poured it into the pigs’ trough. They sniffed it, wrinkled their snouts — and walked away. Even the pigs are smarter than me!
Tomorrow I’ll go to the market, find that peddler. I’ll tell him straight: “Friend, if you ever try to foist this poison on an honest veteran again — I’ll fit that bottle over your head, and drive the cork into your ear. And don’t go complaining after!”
So the lesson’s learned: don’t trust sweet talk, don’t trust shiny labels, trust only your own nose and experience. And experience tells me: a glass of clean well water’s better than such “French cognac”. And cheaper too.
