|🔫| — 🔠ood evening, my, I confess, unknown reader.

It was after the skirmish at Plattsburgh. We were camped, had a bit too much by the fire. I, young and hot‑headed, went and bellowed: “Lee, you’re always poking about in guts and bones, but you’ve got the courage of a chicken!” He just grinned, narrowed his eyes: “Anderson, if you’re so keen to test my mettle — name the time and place. Just know this: I shoot straight.”

So I did. Pride and whiskey — that was all the wisdom I had then. We set the meeting at dawn by the old mill. I came with a pistol, mad as a bear in early spring, and waited. A minute, another, half an hour — no Lee. An hour passed — still no Lee. I was about to go looking for him, and give him a proper scolding.

And then I see him coming, calm as if for a stroll, satchel in hand. He walks up, claps me on the shoulder: “Ah, Anderson! What are you doing out so early?” I was taken aback: “What do you mean, ‘what’? We have a duel, have you forgotten?!” He blinked, scratched his head: “A duel? Oh, yes, the duel… Listen, Anderson, I quite forgot about it. Thought you were jesting. Besides — what’s the sense in shooting each other over drunken talk? Better help me: Private Baker’s wound’s festering, needs rebandaging.”

I stand there, pistol in hand, looking at him — and it hits me: here’s a real man. Not one who runs about with a pistol chasing honour, but one who puts life above foolish pride.

I tossed the pistol into the grass, rolled up my sleeves, and went with him. Helped rebandage Baker, passed the instruments, listened as Lee explained what he was doing and why. And when we finished, he straightened up, wiped his hands on his apron, and said with a grin: “Well, Anderson, is the duel still on?” I laughed: “Blast the duel. Let’s have a drink, Doc. And thank you for being wiser than me.”

We’ve been friends ever since. He heals, I keep order in the town. Once a week he comes to my porch, we drink whiskey and laugh at that tale. And I think every time: it’s a good thing he forgot about that duel. Else I’d not have my best friend — a man who doesn’t play at honour, but simply does what must be done.
