Интересное исследование "Gauging the effects of exercises on verb–noun collocations". Авторов у него четверо: Frank Boers, Murielle Demecheleer, Averil Coxhead, Stuart Webb.
Они утверждают, что упражнения, в которых коллокации разъединяют, менее эффективны, чем упражнения, где коллокации даны intact.
Взяли три популярных вида упражнений на отработку коллокаций, где коллокации, ненаучно выражаясь, раскурочены на части.
1. Назовем эти упражнения "Connect":
Match each of the verbs on the left with the noun on the right that it often occurs with.
make attention
meet a suggestion
pay a deadline
2. Эти упражнения они назвали Insert the Verb:
Choose the right word to complete the blanks: give, make, pay.
- My research team have been working hard, and we are confident we will soon ___ a breakthrough.
- The sales representative tried to __ a demonstration of the efficiency of the new cleaning product.
- My husband just pretends to ___ attention when I talk to him.
3. А эти они назвали Underline the Verb:
Underline the correct verb
- Can I do / give / make a suggestion? Let’s talk about this
again at the next meeting, when we’ve had time to think about it.
- She decided to do / give / make a sacrifice and give up her job so she could look after her ill father.
- Could you do / give / make me a favour and hold my glass for a minute?
И стали сравнивать эффективность упражнений выше вот с таким видом упражнений, где коллокации нетронуты:
Choose the right phrase to complete the blanks: make a suggestion, do business, pay attention.
- I’m a bit hesitant to ____ with such a young firm.
- My husband just pretends to __ when I talk to him.
- Can I _? Let’s take the rest of the day off.
Оказалось, что в последнем случае запоминаемость коллокаций была гораздо выше, потому что "a ‘holistic’
representation of formulaic sequences in memory" гораздо больше соответствует тому, как мозг хранит информацию.
"We predicted that exercises in which verb–noun collocations are presented and manipulated as intact wholes would be less vulnerable to the formation of cross associations between the verb of one collocation and the noun of another than exercises in which students are required to assemble these collocations from distinct parts. This prediction was borne out by the four small-scale trials we have reported here." Однако и в случае с четвертым видом упражнений ошибки в глаголах все равно были.
Авторы отмечают, что Льюис тоже писал, что учителям не следует разбивать коллокации. Хотя и сам в предлагаемых в своих книгах так делал.
