"Evening", 1877
Artist / Alexei Kondratyevich Savrasov
(1830β1897)
πππ
Oil on canvas
141Γ105 cm
By the late 1870s, Savrasov was going through a deeply challenging phase of life. The final two decades of his life were shadowed by personal tragediesβlosing children, family turmoil, and persistent financial hardship.
These struggles were intensified by his battle with alcoholism, which took a heavy toll on both his health and artistic output. Yet despite these hardships, he never stopped creating. His later years still brought forth works of remarkable talent and depth.

"Till Death Us Do Part," 1878
Artist / Edmund Blair Leighton
(1852β1922)
πππ
Oil on canvas
This painting depicts a wedding ceremony in an Anglican church. The bride and groom have just been married and are walking down the aisle, receiving congratulations from guests.
Yet their expressions are strained, and joy is nowhere to be seen. The groom is significantly older than his young brideβlikely a marriage arranged by her parents against her will. The women on the right side of the painting gaze at the bride with quiet sympathy, recognizing the sorrow behind her veil.
To the left, a young man stands visibly distressed, powerless to intervene. He may well be the one she loves, but poverty and low social standing cost him his chance. In the end, itβs not a youth by her side, but an aging man, as tradition and duty override desire.
