This painting depicts a wedding ceremony in an Anglican church. The bride and groom have just been married and are walking down the aisle, receiving congratulations from guests.
Yet their expressions are strained, and joy is nowhere to be seen. The groom is significantly older than his young bride—likely a marriage arranged by her parents against her will. The women on the right side of the painting gaze at the bride with quiet sympathy, recognizing the sorrow behind her veil.
To the left, a young man stands visibly distressed, powerless to intervene. He may well be the one she loves, but poverty and low social standing cost him his chance. In the end, it’s not a youth by her side, but an aging man, as tradition and duty override desire.
