“Boyar Wedding Feast in the 17th Century,” 1883

Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky (1839–1915)

🌸🌸🌸

Oil on canvas, 236 × 400 cm

Makovsky used the “living picture” method, recreating a historical setting with objects from his collection, including period costumes and items from folk life and boyar households.

The bride is his wife, Yulia; Makovsky appears as the groom, with their son Seryozha beside him. Ornate chests, precious goblets, and fine tableware fill the chambers.

The scene shows the wedding feast’s final moments: the traditional “swan” dish arrives, with a roast chicken before the newlyweds. Custom forbade the couple from eating during the celebration. Afterward, they were sent to their bedroom with the chicken to restore their strength. The bride’s bashful expression and guests’ laughter suggest they’re already getting “tips” about what awaits.
