📜 The Ownership Conundrum
🧠 Dr. Parisa Rostami, a sociolinguist of international repute, had long been troubled by a question that lay at the heart of applied linguistics: to whom does English belong? By virtue of its colonial history, the language had spread across the globe, spawning innumerable varieties that diverged from the British and American norms. Yet, many institutions still operated on the grounds that only native-speaker usage was legitimate, thereby delegitimizing the vibrant Englishes of India, Nigeria, and Singapore. Her research, grounded in Kachru's concentric circles model, revealed a disquieting paradox: the very speakers who had enriched English were often stigmatized as deficient.

🧠 The pedagogical implications were profound. If English belonged to all who used it, then the goal of instruction could no longer be imitation of an idealized native speaker. By virtue of this shift, the field could embrace a pluricentric model that valued intelligibility over conformity. So entrenched were the old ideologies that even well-meaning teachers inadvertently perpetuated linguistic hierarchies. What is needed, Dr. Rostami argued, is not merely tolerance of variation but an active celebration of it. It is imperative that teacher education programs abandon the native-speaker fallacy on the grounds that it is both empirically untenable and ethically dubious. Only by recognizing the legitimacy of all varieties could the field hope to liberate learners from the shackles of linguistic insecurity.
