📜 The Verbal Overshadowing Puzzle
🧠 Dr. Shirin Alavi, an incisive cognitive psychologist, had long been troubled by a paradox that seemed to defy common sense: describing a face or an experience in words could actually impair one's memory of it. This phenomenon, known as verbal overshadowing, was first documented in studies of eyewitness identification. In the event that participants were asked to provide a detailed verbal description of a perpetrator before attempting to identify him in a lineup, their accuracy plummeted compared to those who remained silent. No wonder the legal system had begun to rethink its reliance on eyewitness testimony. What is more, the effect appeared to be mediated by the verbal recoding of perceptual memories—a process that substituted fragile linguistic representations for rich, holistic ones.

🧠 Her subsequent experiments demonstrated that the overshadowing effect was most pronounced when participants were compelled to describe configural features—the spatial relationships among facial components—rather than isolated features. So potent was the interference that even a brief verbalization could contaminate a memory that had previously been vivid and accurate. Dr. Alavi recommended that forensic interviewers delay verbal description until after identification procedures, lest they inadvertently compromise a witness's recollection. It is imperative, she argued, that the legal system recognize the fragility of human memory and design protocols that minimize the risk of verbal contamination. Only by acknowledging the limits of linguistic description could we hope to preserve the integrity of perceptual memory.
