🇸🇴 Somalia sets parliamentary and presidential elections for 2027
Somalia announced on October 15 that parliamentary elections will be held on April 15, 2027, followed by a presidential vote on May 15, 2027. The Election Commission said the presidential timetable follows a rule stating that the head of state's five-year term begins on the date of swearing-in.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's term ended earlier in 2026, and the government declared a transition period in May despite an agreement with the opposition on holding elections. Opposition parties have rejected constitutional changes passed earlier this year, while regional leaders have also opposed Mohamud's push for direct elections as Al-Shabaab continues to control parts of the country.
