🌍 African leaders pursue twin strategies to counter inflated risk perceptions
An African Business report published on 1 October 2026 says African leaders are advancing two parallel derisking initiatives in response to what it describes as exaggerated risk premiums in global financial markets. The first focuses on proving the creditworthiness of individual projects through bankability, local guarantees and insurance, while the second aims to reduce exposure to external financial judgments through intra-African trade, domestic capital mobilisation and payment infrastructure.
The report says intra-African trade is projected to grow by 6.6% annually from 2025 to 2028, adding $261.4bn to continental GDP by 2028. It also highlights the Pan-African Payments and Settlement System as a key tool for reducing dependence on external currencies and supporting implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
