🌍 Africa’s Top 100 banks post record growth in 2026 ranking
African Business reported on 5 October that the combined Tier 1 capital of Africa’s Top 100 banks rose 23% year-on-year to $155bn in its 2026 ranking, up from $126.1bn in 2025 and above the previous record of $135.3bn set in 2022. Total assets increased 16% from $1.56 trillion to $1.8 trillion. South Africa’s Standard Bank retained first place with Tier 1 capital of $15.7bn, assets of $217.7bn and net profits of $3.4bn, followed by Egypt’s National Bank of Egypt at $10.5bn and Morocco’s Attijariwafa Bank at $7.68bn.
According to the report, the rebound reflected stronger exchange rates, improved profitability and faster growth, with the IMF estimating sub-Saharan Africa grew 4.5% in 2025 while median inflation fell from 4.8% at the end of 2024 to 3.4% a year later.
