Dangote Group CEO Aliko Dangote and Kenyan President William Ruto on 1 October 2026 broke ground on a planned $16bn oil refinery in Mokowe, Lamu County. The Dangote East Africa Petroleum and Petrochemicals Special Economic Zone is expected to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, be completed within 40 months, and create up to 60,000 direct and indirect jobs in Lamu and neighbouring counties.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and leaders from Togo and Benin attended the ceremony. Ahead of the launch, some residents protested over compensation, while a local court blocked some development activities until a case filed by 133 residents is heard on 14 October.
