🌍 The Bantu expansion, in brief
About 350 million people speak Bantu languages today. Genetics supports an origin in west-central Africa near Cameroon 4,000–6,000 years ago, followed by stepwise movements east and south.
Diversity tapers with distance from the origin, which fits serial founder effects. Mixing was local and region specific: rainforest hunter-gatherers in the Congo Basin, Khoe-San groups in the south, and Afro-Asiatic neighbors in East Africa. Zambia and the DRC stand out as crossroads where different Bantu streams met.
Ancient DNA from Late Iron Age burials aligns with this picture of continuity in the south and mixed ancestries in central hubs.
Takeaway: A west-to-east and west-to-south spread, shaped by founder effects and local admixture, best explains today’s Bantu genetic landscape.
