The road to hell has almost finished construction.

Scientists have already managed to teach biocomputing-brains to play Doom through an AI that would send signals depending on the game state. This begs the question: how ethical is this? Is the brain conscious, considering it shows responses like distress?

Of course, technophiles and technocrats funding this don't give a rat's ass about ethics. As long as no serious damage is done to the System, they're fine crossing EVERY red line, even the line of "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream".

Technology that could cause endless slavery and torture is being developed, and it's barely even being talked about. Uncle Ted was right.

For me and many, many other people a high material standard of living consists not in cars, television sets, or fancy houses, but in open spaces, forests, wild plants and animals, and clear-flowing streams.

As measured by that criterion our material standard of living is falling rapidly."

The modern (bourgeois) idea that primitive life was ‘awful’ makes little sense. Hunter-gatherers lived in wild Nature: the environment they (& we) evolved for. Why would they be so miserable? I am not aware of any animal which is miserable in its natural habitat...

“Pausing” AI, as Hinton has previously suggested, or hoping a superintelligent deity takes us as adoptive children do not strike at the core; those are losing strategies. The core of the disruption to human life—and the natural world more broadly—lies in the technological substrate of industrial society. Not only does it destroy ways of life as quickly as it creates them, it stands to end it all as we know it.
