Trump vs the “EV mandate.”

Here’s what’s actually changing.

Trump says he’s ending what he calls the Biden–Buttigieg EV mandate. What’s on the table is a weaker fuel-economy rule: Biden’s target was about 50 mpg by 2031. Duffy’s version lands closer to 34.5. Not a federal ban on gas in the showroom. It’s Washington dialing back how hard it pushes the fleet toward higher MPG — and, in practice, more EVs.

Trump’s speech goes further. He says the old rules stuck buyers with cars they didn’t want, charging buildout stalled, and plants are coming back to Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Treat that as the pitch. The charger network slowed and froze in places. It didn’t vanish. An EV can still win on price and demand. Forcing the mix is a different animal.

I don’t need D.C. writing my driveway for me. If I want electric, I’ll buy electric. If I want gas, that’s my money and my commute — especially while groceries are already chewing a hole in the month.
