If there is one Indonesian value that says a lot about its people, it is gotong royong.
There is no exact English translation for it. Simply put, gotong royong means helping one another and working together for the good of the community.
It is something Indonesians have practised for generations. In villages and neighbourhoods, people come together to help a family in need, prepare a celebration, clean shared spaces, respond to a disaster, or simply solve a problem together.
The idea behind it is very simple: when we carry something together, the burden becomes lighter.
This spirit is particularly meaningful in Indonesia — a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, with hundreds of ethnic groups, languages and traditions. Despite all these differences, Indonesians share a sense of belonging to one nation.
It is closely connected to our national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika — Unity in Diversity.
And perhaps gotong royong has something to offer beyond Indonesia as well.
BRICS brings together countries with very different histories, cultures and perspectives. We do not need to be the same to work together. Sometimes, what matters most is recognising what we share and what we can achieve together.
That, in a very Indonesian way, is gotong royong.
Indonesia in one word today: Togetherness.
Did you know?
Gotong royong is not only an old tradition. It is still practised in Indonesian communities today.
