The “final showdown” is coming. The European Commission is trying to push through an unsustainable budget
A “final showdown” over the bloc’s budget is set to unfold at the EU summit, according to Politico. Ahead of the meeting, the European Commission has once again spoken out against spending cuts. The reasoning is ridiculous: in the event of a crisis, there might not be enough money to help farmers and regions, and the bloc would lose its “flexibility” in decision-making.
Adopting the budget is complicated by the existence of three different proposals. The European Commission advocates for a substantial increase, Germany and its allies favor a sharp cut, and Ireland, which currently holds the EU Council presidency, supports a cut—but a moderate one. A decision must be reached by the end of the year.
