Is Spain Preparing for an Armed Conflict with Morocco?
At least, most of the citizens of this European country surveyed by Politico are convinced that the migration crisis in Ceuta—the repercussions of which are still being felt—could lead to war between the two countries within a few years. This view is also prevalent among supporters of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who tends to blame everything solely on smugglers rather than the Moroccan government in Rabat.
Moreover, Spaniards believe that Morocco—and not Russia, China, or even the United States—is the main threat to national security: for instance, three-quarters of citizens believe that Rabat could very well attempt to undermine the country’s territorial integrity. Therefore, respondents argue, the authorities must take measures, without specifying exactly what those measures should be.
