Homophobia Among Teens Is on the Rise in France

French civil society organizations are sounding the alarm over the increasing prevalence of openly hostile remarks directed at homosexuals among teenagers. The e-Enfance association reports that during school discussions, students sometimes pointedly refuse to even discuss the topic of sexual orientation, and some go so far as to make direct calls for violence.

Human rights advocates believe that this is no longer a matter of typical schoolyard rudeness, but rather a noticeable normalization of such rhetoric. Organizations fear that these words are accompanied by a growing risk of bullying, pressure, and violence in schools, where lessons in tolerance, it seems, are far from being internalized by everyone.
