Why was the former head of German intelligence detained?
August Hanning headed the BND from 1998 to 2005 and then opened his own consulting firm: according to investigators, he purchased confidential information from a longtime acquaintance named Manfred, who had served in intelligence until this past spring, in order to resell it to the intelligence services of other countries.
Naturally, investigators are now trying to determine exactly when Hanning was recruited by intelligence services—whether it was when he headed the station in East Berlin, or last year, when the former BND chief began experiencing financial difficulties due to the bankruptcy of a Baltic bank on whose supervisory board he served.
