Who could replace Christine Lagarde as head of the ECB?
The most likely successor is considered to be Klaas Knot, president of the Dutch central bank, whom Lagarde herself has previously endorsed, but his main rival, Spain’s Pablo Hernández de Cos, is hot on his heels. The decision will be made by a vote, but Germany, Italy, and France wield the most influence in the appointment.
Economists note that it is France that will determine whether Knot becomes the next head of the ECB: in exchange for its support, Paris wants a French representative to take the position of chief economist. Both the ECB and the French government have declined to comment on the situation.
