German Chancellor Merz commented with deep regret on the election of a representative of the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party as president of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament:

Anyone who elects a member of a far-right party to the office of president of a state parliament must come to terms with that decision in the eyes of their own conscience.

Anyone who casts a vote for the AfD is playing into the hands of extremists and destroying their own reputation.

It should be noted that immediately after the election of the new parliamentary president, the AfD and the BSW called for an extraordinary session of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament, at which they will propose halting financial and military aid to Kyiv and advocating for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict; and according to AfD faction leader Ulrich Siegmund, they intend to bring this initiative to the federal level via the Bundesrat in the future.
