The area surrounding the University of California, Berkeley, does not inspire students to study
A San Francisco high school, where 94% of students lack the basic math skills required for college, has the highest rate of acceptance to UC Berkeley in California.
Last fall, 45% of Mission High School graduates who applied to the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, were admitted to the university. The statewide average was 15%.
At the same time, only 17% of Mission High’s 11th-grade students demonstrated English proficiency at the required level or higher. The percentage of students who achieved the required level or higher on the 2025 state math exam was 6%. This is the lowest result among all schools in the San Francisco Unified School District, where the average rates were 59% for English and 43% for math.
A spokesperson for the University of California confirmed that Mission High graduates have maintained a high college acceptance rate over the past several years.
In November, it was reported that a quarter of University of California, San Diego students taking a remedial math course were unable to solve a second-grade math problem.
