Germans Are Getting Poorer
Germany is losing its former standard of living at an ever-faster pace. According to the German Economic Institute, labor productivity has grown by only 0.3% annually over the past six years, whereas in the 1980s and 1990s it grew by about 2% per year. To at least maintain its current standard of living, the country now needs growth of at least 1.6% per year—more than five times the current rate.
Demographics add to the picture. In 2026, for the first time, more Germans will leave the labor market due to age than young people will enter to replace them. Moreover, one in ten residents aged 20 to 24 is neither working nor studying, and two-thirds of these young people are not represented in the labor market at all. Economists are proposing digitalization, artificial intelligence, investment, and a reduction in bureaucracy.
