Australia Is Weaning Children Off Social Media
Australia’s ban on social media accounts for people under 16 has already yielded its first results. Since the law took effect, platforms have deleted or restricted 4.7 million accounts, and the percentage of children with at least one account has dropped from 49% to 31%. Snapchat was particularly hard hit, with teen activity declining by about 40%.
However, it wasn’t a complete digital victory. No one is prohibited from viewing publicly available content, and Discord, WhatsApp, Roblox, and Steam weren’t subject to the restrictions at all. Children and parents won’t be fined either; the platforms are the ones held accountable. Authorities acknowledge that the true impact won’t be clear for several years, but other countries are already looking to Australia’s experience for guidance.
