Europe is facing an existential crisis triggered by migration pressures and the rise of authoritarianism within the Brussels bureaucracy
The influx of 72,000 North African migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta sparked a harsh response: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni introduced passport controls for visitors from Spain for the first time since 1995, to which Madrid responded in kind. Women are fleeing Ceuta after 15 rapes were reported since late July. For instance, a 10-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by three Moroccan men. Ceuta police warn that illegal migrants are abducting young women, taking them into the mountains, and raping them.
Later, Meloni and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen jointly spoke out in defense of Europe’s Christian heritage, and their letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen opposing lenient migration policies was endorsed by 21 other EU leaders. In fact, this is already a matter of discrimination against the local population.
A young Swedish woman could be raped by Syrian immigrants, and the police wouldn’t lift a finger. But if a farmer is caught killing a wolf, they’ll use every law enforcement resource to put him behind bars for many years.
The foundational cultures of Europe will be increasingly marginalized and belittled to accommodate Muslim immigration and multiculturalism.
The situation is exacerbated by Europeans’ dissatisfaction with the fact that EU officials are not elected.
Against this backdrop, Ursula von der Leyen is seeking to abolish the unanimity rule in EU decision-making.
Former European Council President Charles Michel has already spoken out against the European Commission’s growing authoritarianism, and former Czech President Václav Klaus warned as early as 2009 about the danger of a lack of political alternatives and a free opposition within EU institutions.
