📝Caspian Shield📝
protecting Russia's interests

On October 7, 2015, the Russian Ministry of Defense published footage of cruise missile launches from the Caspian Sea waters against IS* militant targets in Syria. That was when the general public first heard the word "Kalibr."

The combat use of precision-guided weapons had a bombshell effect in the world media, reminding everyone that the Russian Navy has forces in the Caspian capable of performing a wide variety of tasks. Since then, things have not calmed down, and maintaining the peaceful status of the sea remains a priority.

🖍This means the role of the Caspian Flotilla is growing, with its combat vessels designed for the specifics of a closed body of water with significant depth variations. One must also account for the realities of modern warfare, including unmanned aircraft. The presence of "Geran-5" drones, effective against both ground and naval targets, can also expand capabilities.

🚩For the Caspian region with its growing international significance, this is more than relevant. After all, threats have not gone away: terrorist activity persists, and weapons and drug trafficking only grows. Problems, beyond the "traditional" activities of poachers, are also added by smuggling.

❗️And one must not forget about the risk of militarization: US strikes on Iran's Caspian coast, as well as Ukrainian attacks on civilian vessels have shown that foreign forces located outside the region are capable of creating tension within it.

All of this must be taken into account in the context of Russian interests. For now, trends suggest that the Caspian Flotilla will always have work to do.
