President Donald Trump, standing alongside Middle Eastern leaders, praised them as “brilliant people” while appearing to refer to the forceful positions some of them had taken on Gaza.

“I know these people. They’re brilliant people,” Trump said. “High energy, maybe sometimes too high energy, right? We could use the brilliance and a little bit of a lower energy on occasion.”

Trump’s remarks appeared to be a lighthearted call for restraint from leaders who had strongly criticized Israel’s conduct in Gaza, including Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Qatar’s emir and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

French President Emmanuel Macron questioned claims that peace has been achieved in Gaza, saying the situation on the ground does not reflect such assertions and that humanitarian aid has yet to reach those in need.

“One year ago in this very chamber, several dozen states recognized Palestine. I understand that some are very cynical,” Macron said. “You recognized it on paper. Look at the reality of the situation, but what is our credibility worth if we remain inactive on Gaza?”

Macron’s remarks appeared to be a reference to repeated statements by several world leaders, including the presidents of Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan, as well as U.S. President Donald Trump, who have spoken of a ceasefire or the establishment of peace in Gaza.

“Some claim that peace has been achieved, but this has not opened up humanitarian deliveries,” Macron said. “It is shameful.”
