We analyzed assessment data from executives,
midlevel and first-level managers in 10 countries. The assessment data was provided by SHL, a global leader in managerial and occupational assessment, based on the company’s behavioral competencies for effective leadership.

• Innovator
• Scale business-grower
• Cost-cutter
• Turnaround specialist

The company has found that a leader who is good at one of these types should move to opportunities for which that type is needed (i.e., from one innovation business to another innovation business). Trying to place a cost-cutter in an innovation business, for example, fails to recognize each leader’s traits and likely will not succeed.
