💀 Is Cocoon done?

⚫️ According to Resistor, Cocoon’s public network currently has no active workers left — the nodes that provide compute capacity. Without them, the network can’t process requests, which means Cocoon is effectively unusable right now.

⚫️ This could simply be a temporary outage. Still, it’s hard to ignore that there hasn’t been much demand for the technology inside the ecosystem over the past year. According to Dr. Doge’s dashboard, only two nodes were available on the network over the past month, with just 17 registered clients, while compute providers earned less than 600 TON in total.

⚫️ Telegram itself doesn’t seem to be paying much attention to the technology either. The last changes to Cocoon’s open-source code were made more than four months ago, while the project’s official channel hasn’t been updated since last year.

⚫️ There’s another odd detail. Even if the workers come back online, Cocoon’s public client will still be running Qwen3-32B — an outdated model released more than a year ago. Meanwhile, Telegram’s built-in translator, which the company says processes messages through Cocoon’s confidential network, is already running on the newer Qwen3.5.

⚫️ So either Telegram is using a separate version of Cocoon with different code and private infrastructure, or it may no longer be using the public network at all. There’s no way to verify that from the outside, but one thing is clear: the public Cocoon network badly needs updates, more compute providers, and more users.

👁 Why are crypto bots introducing KYC?

⚫️ When xRocket first appeared in the TON ecosystem, its main advantage was obvious: you could store and send crypto directly inside Telegram. Over time, the project grew from a convenient wallet into a fairly large centralized platform.

⚫️ With growing popularity and higher trading volumes comes the need for AML checks and KYC. That is a natural step for any service handling other people’s money: without compliance checks, it becomes much harder to fight fraud and maintain relationships with payment partners. Crypto Bot went through this earlier, and now it looks like xRocket is heading in the same direction. Over the past few days, users have noticed updated Terms of Use for the app.

⚫️ According to xRocket’s documents, the service may link a Telegram account to an IP address, completed KYC, and transaction history. If something raises questions, the team may request proof of source of funds, pause a transfer, or freeze assets. User data may also be shared with government authorities in response to a valid legal request. Put like that, it sounds pretty serious, although for a centralized exchange this has long been completely standard practice.

⚫️ Just recently, it was reported that Binance shared data about a Russian citizen’s transfers with Russian authorities, even though the exchange announced its exit from Russia back in 2023. The story is another reminder that full anonymity has never really existed with custodial services. Behind every Telegram bot there is an operator who can keep internal records and see transfers made inside the platform.

💡 So it really comes down to your priorities. If you want to avoid KYC and keep full control of your funds, use Gram Wallet and trade through DeDust. If the convenience of a custodial service matters more, xRocket remains the best option inside Telegram.

🪙 What should we expect from .gram domains?

⚫️ Yesterday, Pavel Durov said that Telegram had applied for the .gram top-level domain. If ICANN approves the application, Telegram users could eventually get their own domains — for example, @durov could become durov.gram, while we could get thedailyton.gram.

⚫️ The news got a mixed reaction across TON. Why does the ecosystem need another set of regular web domains when TON DNS already exists, and usernames bought on Fragment can already double as wallet addresses and even be used for TON Sites?

⚫️ TOP CEO Andrey Rogozov added some useful context. According to him, .ton domains will remain aliases for TON addresses, while .gram is meant to be a proper web domain with ownership secured through TON. That would likely mean tokenizing .gram domains as NFTs and turning them into another digital asset on Fragment.

⚫️ Still, let’s be honest: for anyone outside the ecosystem, keeping track of this growing domain-name zoo is going to be a challenge. The blockchain is still called TON, its native coin is now Gram, .ton and t.me domains already exist, regular .gram domains may be coming, and the ecosystem already has a separate Web3 collection of .gram domains. Good luck to the next generation of users trying to make sense of all that.

⚫️ Durov also suggested that personal .gram websites could be generated from a prompt — presumably through Cocoon — and hosted on Telegram’s servers. So it is still unclear whether .gram domains will work like regular domains that you can point to your own website, or whether they will be limited to simple AI-generated profile pages.

⚫️ Either way, we are still a long way from typing thedailyton.gram into a browser. ICANN’s application window only closed on August 12, and applications still have to go through evaluation, possible contention between companies applying for the same TLD, and the rest of the approval process. So even if Telegram’s bid succeeds, a .gram launch before 2028 looks unlikely.

🍌 Is TON Core building the engine for Gram Wallet?

⚫️ A curious repository has appeared on the GitHub profile of TON Core developer Petr Makhnev: wallet-engine. It’s a Rust library that implements the core logic of a TON wallet, including Wallet V5R1 creation and import, transaction history, sending transactions, and more. V5R1 is TON’s latest general-purpose wallet standard, so the terminology here is consistent with TON’s current stack.

⚫️ The main idea is that developers wouldn’t need to build a separate wallet implementation for every platform. Wallet Engine acts as a shared Rust core, while each app adds its own UI, networking layer, and local storage on top. Bindings for Swift, Kotlin, TypeScript, and C++ are already available — which happens to line up neatly with Telegram’s clients across iOS, Android, Web, and Desktop.

⚫️ That makes it look like TON Core may be building a shared wallet engine for Telegram, allowing the same Gram Wallet core to be integrated across all of its apps. Instead of maintaining four separate wallet implementations, Telegram could rely on a single shared core for TON logic, while each client only handles the native UI and platform-specific features.

⚫️ The timing lines up pretty well too. It’s already August 18, leaving less than two weeks for integration and release. Place your bets: will Telegram manage to ship its self-custodial wallet before the end of summer?

🖊 Interview with Resistor, TON’s biggest Web3 builder

⚫️️️️ Over the past year, Resistor has single-handedly built an entire suite of Resistance tools on TON — many of which we’ve covered before: Resistance Tools, Tonnet Browser, Teleton Agent, gateways for TON Sites, tools for TON Storage, ZK pools, and other infrastructure.

⚫️️️️ Right now, Resistor needs financial support to keep working independently on these tools and maintain the services that are already live. We’ve included more details on how to help at the end of the post. But first, we sat down with him for a short conversation about how he got into TON and what he expects from MTONGA.

— How did you first get into TON, and what were you doing before that?

Hey, I don’t really remember the first time. But I already had a wallet before @wallet was inside Telegram. Once it was integrated, I became much more active on TON. Back then, you could send crypto in inline mode with @wallet. That was awesome.

— You’ve been actively building Web3 tools on TON, and in the chat you even called the TON Primer your “bible.” What do you think is the real strength of Web3 on TON? After all, TON is far from the only ecosystem trying to build a decentralized internet.

Most blockchains start as a ledger [systems for keeping track of who owns what, who sent what to whom and so on — The Daily TON], then try to become “the new internet.” In facts, they just built Finance 3.0.

TON is built different, as a network first, then the blockchain is built on top of it. Naming, storage, proxying, sites and more are part of one stack. Not any other chain have done it.

— Your productivity is kind of insane — in just one year, you built Resistance Tools, Teleton, Tonnet Browser, and a lot more. I assume you use AI agents for coding, right? How much have you already spent on tokens?

Yes, that’s right. I haven’t kept exact track, but it’s been a lot. I think I’ve burned through more than a billion tokens by now.

— Out of everything already built into TON’s infrastructure, what do you think is the most underrated part right now?

Almost everyone building on TON today is making Mini Apps, bots, or launching memecoins.

But people forget about the parts that actually make TON unique: ADNL, DHT, overlays, TON DNS, TON Sites, TON Proxy, TON Storage, and so on. That’s the real Web3 layer, and almost nobody is building on it yet.

— If you could change just one thing about TON, what would it be?

If I could change one thing, I’d probably make communication more transparent. For example, I’d like to see a public and detailed explanation of what exactly it means for Telegram to replace the TON Foundation.

— Over the past month, the mood around TON across the ecosystem seems to have changed quite a lot. Are you still positive about TON and MTONGA?

MTONGA is basically a continuation of TON’s original roadmap. What I’m waiting to see now is how exactly Telegram replaces the TON Foundation. It’s already been three months, and so far the community hasn’t been shown much.

— Has anyone reached out after your request to offer financial support?

No, unfortunately. So far, I’ve only had suggestions to create NFTs or memecoins.

✈️ Happy birthday, Telegram!

⚫️ Telegram turns 13 today. As Pavel Durov noted, for most of its history, Telegram has ranked among the world’s ten most downloaded mobile apps.

⚫️ For us, as for many TON enthusiasts, this day is special for another reason: without Telegram, TON would probably not exist in its current form. Over the past few years, Telegram has gone from an outside observer to the main force shaping the ecosystem, and now it is preparing for its next big step — launching the native self-custodial Gram Wallet.

⚫️ We still don’t know what comes next for MTONGA. But TON itself is already being prepared for the additional load. Two days ago, Anatoliy Makosov said that collators will go live on August 17 — dedicated nodes that will assemble blocks while validators focus on verifying them.

⚫️ According to Makosov, the upgrade should increase network throughput. And the timing is no coincidence: once the self-custodial wallet launches inside Telegram, developers expect a noticeable increase in onchain activity.

⚫️ So on Telegram’s birthday, we hope it stays the best app for messaging — and eventually helps TON reach a similar position in crypto.

🪙 Is Telegram making Gram Wallet harder to block?

⚫️ Telegram Desktop developer John Preston has published tproxy-server, an experimental web proxy for Telegram. Preston says he vibe-coded the project, and the repo itself describes it as a proof of concept, but the idea is laid out pretty clearly in the documentation.

⚫️ Normally, the Telegram client connects directly to Telegram’s servers. With an MTProto Proxy enabled, that traffic is routed through an intermediary proxy instead, helping users bypass network restrictions. tproxy-server adds another layer: it tunnels those proxy connections over ordinary HTTPS requests to a hostname that still behaves like a regular website to everyone else.

⚫️ Meanwhile, references to a new MTProto layer for TON have appeared in the Telegram iOS beta. According to teleLakel, requests to TON Center are routed through Telegram’s servers rather than being sent directly from the app.

⚫️ Why does that matter? Any wallet needs to talk to the network somewhere when checking balances or broadcasting transactions. Usually, that means connecting to a node or an API provider such as TON Center. If Telegram puts its own servers between the client and TON Center, the wallet no longer needs to connect to the public TON Center endpoint directly, making that connection much harder for an ISP to target or block.

⚫️ There is no confirmed link between the two developments. But amid restrictions on Telegram in Russia, one plausible explanation is that tproxy-server could help tunnel Telegram traffic over ordinary HTTPS, while the new TON layer could remove Gram Wallet’s direct dependency on publicly reachable TON infrastructure. For a wallet that is supposed to live directly inside Telegram, some extra resilience against blocking certainly wouldn’t hurt.

❤️ What does Telegram have in store for its birthday?

⚫️ It’s only Wednesday, but we’re already looking ahead to Friday. Telegram turns 13 on August 14 — the first version of the app launched on iOS on that day back in 2013.

⚫️ This year, the date is especially interesting for the TON community. In July, Pavel Durov promised the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in history, saying that a native Gram Wallet would be coming to every Telegram app.

⚫️ Whether Gram Wallet actually drops on Telegram’s birthday is still an open question. There’s nothing in the public Android beta yet that looks like the new non-custodial wallet. Telegram could be saving it for the symbolic date, or just as easily push the release toward the end of August. Either way, the clock is ticking on Durov’s promised “this summer” timeline.

⚫️ Version 12.10 is also expected to bring a few other features. According to dataminer teleLakel, Rich Messages are getting button support, while groups and channels will get Welcome Messages — dedicated messages shown to users right after they join.

⚫️ But for us, Friday’s main story is still Gram Wallet. Back in May, ahead of TON’s birthday, we wondered whether Telegram might finally bring some new TON use cases directly into the app. TON didn’t get a birthday present that time, but three months later one may finally be on the way — this time for Telegram’s own birthday.

🍌 How scammers are making up a new biography for Nikolai Durov

⚫️ Over the past few weeks, mentions of a mysterious AI project called VISION, supposedly linked to Nikolai Durov, have been popping up here and there. As part of our #antiscam series, we decided to take a closer look — and what we found is a pretty unusual example of just how far scammers are willing to go to make a fake project look legitimate.

⚫️ The story they picked is actually quite convincing. More than a year ago, Pavel Durov said that his brother was working on his own “thinking AI,” something different from conventional LLMs. No public details have surfaced since, and it looks like scammers decided to fill that information vacuum themselves.

⚫️ The “project” has its own website, while Nikolai Durov has effectively been given an entirely new online identity. There is a personal résumé-style page listing VISION as his latest project, a LinkedIn profile supposedly belonging to Durov with a matching bio, and — to make the whole thing look even more convincing — an 80-page whitepaper allegedly written by him.

⚫️ The document starts falling apart pretty quickly once you look at it closely. There are plenty of inconsistencies, while the most interesting part — how this new “thinking AI” is actually supposed to think — is described surprisingly superficially. Meanwhile, dozens of pages are spent on much more basic technical details, including hashes and various record formats. We also asked ChatGPT to review the technical side of the whitepaper separately, and its assessment was highly skeptical as well.

⚫️ The biography raises similar questions. As Full Metal Jetton reported last year, very little is known about Nikolai’s life today: he lives in Dubai, got married, and became a father. And given how private he has always been, it is pretty hard to imagine him suddenly setting up a personal landing page and actively promoting a new project online.

💡 The biggest red flag comes at the very end: the project’s website lets you connect a TON wallet and sign a transaction. Needless to say, do not do that. As always with #antiscam, the advice is simple: stay vigilant, verify what you see, and don’t trust something just because it looks convincing.

💡 Why is TON disappearing from project names?

⚫️ A curious migration plan appeared in Tonkeeper’s repository today: the wallet is preparing to move its web app from wallet.tonkeeper.com to app.keeperwallet.com. We haven’t seen any official rebranding announcement yet, but the commit was deleted shortly after it appeared, so there’s a good chance Tonkeeper could soon become Keeper Wallet.

⚫️ This wouldn’t be the first time something like this has happened in the ecosystem. In June, MyTonWallet officially shortened its name to My Wallet. By then, TON was no longer the wallet’s only network: TRON support arrived back in 2024, and the app now supports more than ten blockchains. So the move is hardly surprising.

⚫️ Still, given TON’s current state, rebrands like these are easy to read as a worrying sign: the ecosystem is going through a rough patch, while some of its biggest projects seem to be distancing themselves from TON.

⚫️ We see it differently. For a large crypto product, having a specific chain name baked into the brand eventually becomes more of a limitation than an advantage. Uniswap, Jupiter, Raydium, and PancakeSwap don’t tell you which blockchain they originally launched on either. And if a wallet wants to compete with Trust Wallet, Phantom, and MetaMask, it would be strange to remain simply “the TON wallet” forever.

⚫️ So we’d rather see TON disappearing from project names as a sign that these products have outgrown a single chain. Projects that were built entirely around TON a few years ago are now trying to compete with much bigger players across crypto.

🍌 Is Telegram preparing to launch NFT stickers?

⚫️ Hard to believe, but it has already been more than two years since Telegram first teased NFT stickers and emoji. Back in spring 2024, Pavel Durov said at TOKEN2049 that Telegram planned to tokenize stickers and emoji, with their creators receiving 95% of the sales revenue.

⚫️ Durov used the famous “Haha, classic” duck as an example. The sticker had already spread far beyond Telegram and become a popular internet meme. According to him, had someone owned the rights to it from day one, the NFT could have rivaled Anonymous Numbers in terms of price appreciation.

⚫️ Telegram has not publicly returned to the idea in the two years since. Meanwhile, the ecosystem has already seen third-party NFT sticker marketplaces launch, shut down, and trigger a sizeable wave of community backlash. Pretty much everything has happened except the promised rollout.

⚫️ Now there is a reason to revisit the idea. Community researchers spotted a major update to tlottie, the library Telegram uses to render animated stickers and emoji. According to their findings, it received its first major overhaul in years: frame rendering is now two to three times faster, with the biggest gains coming from small 64×64 animations—the exact size used in the sticker picker and emoji keyboard. The updated library is already being integrated into Telegram Web and Telegram Android.

⚫️ Does this prove that NFT stickers are launching soon? Of course not. Telegram may simply be cleaning up some old code. But if MTONGA is meant to integrate Gram more deeply into Telegram, stickers and emoji fit that strategy too well for the timing to feel like pure coincidence—especially when we have already been waiting more than two years for tokenized collections.

📉 How much has TON changed in a year?

⚫️ It has been over two months since Pavel Durov announced MTONGA’s fourth step. The transition was supposed to take around three weeks, yet the fifth step has still not been announced. Meanwhile, the upcoming self-custodial wallet built into Telegram makes no mention of MTONGA and may well be a separate initiative altogether.

⚫️ So the ecosystem is once again waiting for its next big catalyst. And the longer the silence drags on, the harder it is not to look back and ask: what has actually changed in TON over the past year?

⚫️ Looking at the last 365 days, the numbers are pretty grim. Gram is down more than 50%, DEX volumes have roughly halved as well, onchain activity has declined, and a number of projects have either shut down or quietly disappeared. The community even launched @TheOpenCemetery, a channel that tracks dead TON projects. The active user base has shrunk too: most of those still around are OGs who were here before the tap-to-earn wave.

⚫️ Still, the year was not a complete write-off. Gram has attracted more English-speaking traders and builders. Mikey from Groyp, for example, brought people into the ecosystem who probably would not have paid attention to TON otherwise. And Gram shifting from TON Foundation to Durov looks like a positive signal, reviving hopes that the coin could eventually see deeper integration with Telegram.

⚫️ So yes, things in TON are not looking great. But honestly, they could be worse. We are hanging on for Telegram’s birthday and the launch of its self-custodial wallet—probably the ecosystem’s best chance in a while to finally get some momentum back.

⌨️ How to rent storage on TON Storage

⚫️ Last summer, we covered MyTonProvider — a tool that lets server owners rent out spare disk space and earn TON. According to TON Core developers, the decentralized storage network is primarily used to distribute archival copies of the TON blockchain, although it can store virtually any type of file.

⚫️ Say you need to keep a file available without relying on a single hosting provider. With TON Storage, you can pay several providers to store copies of it and make the file accessible through a .ton link that opens directly in Telegram. Resistor’s app now supports exactly this use case. TON DNS can map a .ton domain to a TON Storage Bag ID.

⚫️ First, upload your files to TON Storage and get a Bag ID — an identifier similar to a magnet link. The easiest option is @ResiStorageBot, while more technical users can upload files through the `tonutils-storage` client. Then open @ResistanceToolsBot, tap the profile seven times, and go to Experimental Features → TON Storage Provider.

⚫️ From there, head to TON Storage → Pin → Storage Providers, paste your Bag ID, and choose the servers you want to use. There are currently more than 15 providers across different countries, while storing 200 GB costs around 10 TON on average. You can choose the storage period and set how often automated checks are performed to confirm that each provider still holds the file.

⚫️ This setup is probably overkill for everyday photos. But when a file needs to remain available without depending on a single host, you can distribute copies across several servers in different countries. As long as at least one provider continues storing the data, the file will remain accessible.

🚀 Everyone has their own TON

⚫️ Even with activity around TON running fairly low, the ecosystem is still alive. Look a little closer, and it starts to feel less like one ecosystem and more like several smaller circles, each with a very different view of where TON is headed.

⚫️ Take prominent crypto influencer Crashius Clay. His feed is extremely bullish on GRAM right now. He is pushing the thesis that TON memecoins could repeat Base’s memecoin run, and that thin liquidity and low trading volumes are only temporary. And he is far from the only one on X making that case.

⚫️ Over on the Telegram-side, the mood could hardly be more different. Channels like Vudi’s and Kirill Filimonov’s show a much darker side of TON — one that can leave you feeling as though the coin’s days are numbered. Years of waiting, frustration with the former leadership’s questionable decisions, and the resulting negativity toward the network are all part of the ecosystem too.

⚫️ But TON is bigger than those two extremes. There are still local communities, small trading circles, Web3 enthusiasts, independent builders, and die-hard TON believers. The upcoming launch of a self-custodial wallet built directly into Telegram is also giving people another reason to pay attention and keeping interest in TON from fading completely.

⚫️ That makes TON difficult to define through a single narrative. It means something different to everyone — and perhaps that is exactly what makes it interesting. What does TON mean to you?

👁 How many official TON explorers are there?

⚫️ Let’s take a break from the news about Pavel Durov being added to Russia’s list of terrorists and extremists and get back to good old TON. Last week, members of the ecosystem noticed that actonscan is now under active development — a new block explorer that some channels have already called “the only official explorer built by TON Core.”

⚫️ The explorer is expected to become part of the Acton toolkit, which we covered in a previous post. Its interface clearly takes inspiration from popular explorers like Tonscan, but actonscan is primarily aimed at developers. It already supports transaction simulation, smart contract debugging, and several other developer-focused features.

⚫️ But actonscan is far from the first official explorer in TON’s history. Back in the early days of the ecosystem, there was ton.cx — a block explorer built by TON Core developers that served as one of the ecosystem’s main developer tools for years. There was also ton.sh, which was promoted by the official Toncoin community during TON’s early years.

⚫️ In fact, the oldest official explorer is still online today: explorer.toncoin.org. It’s a low-level block explorer for inspecting blocks and transactions, and it’s mostly useful for developers.

⚫️ So actonscan is far from TON’s first official explorer — or even its first explorer built for developers. Hopefully, once it fully launches, it will make building smart contracts on TON a little easier, and the ecosystem will finally have more new projects than block explorers.

💀 There’s no such thing as bad publicity

⚫️ Pavel Durov was charged in Russia today with facilitating terrorist activity. The news can hardly be called a surprise: back in April, Pavel himself said that a summons addressed to “suspect P. V. Durov” had been delivered to his former address in Russia.

⚫️ The case is unlikely to cause Durov any immediate trouble. He lives in the UAE and holds Emirati citizenship, while the country’s constitution prohibits the extradition of its own citizens. For now, this looks like another chapter in his long-running conflict with the Russian authorities.

⚫️ TON’s memecoin market, meanwhile, reacted almost instantly. Within hours, several tokens appeared, all trying to capitalize on the criminal case against Pavel Durov. As a reminder, x1000.finance is the most convenient place to track new launches and trade memecoins on TON.

⚫️ Whether any of these tokens will gain real traction and stick around remains to be seen. Memecoins can pump within minutes and disappear just as quickly, so remember to DYOR before buying. We previously explained how to spot promising memecoins before it is too late in a separate post.

📒 Who will actually see Gram Wallet?

⚫️ Things are quiet in TON again, so let’s go back to last week’s main story one more time. This time, here is a subjective #opinion on the future Gram Wallet release — we would be happy to read yours in the comments.

⚫️ On paper, the scale is impressive: one billion users could get a crypto wallet. But shipping the product is not the same as getting people to notice it, let alone use it. The problem is that Telegram still does not really have a proper discovery layer for features and apps. Even regular updates are often discovered through Stories from the official account — if you do not open them, a new feature can easily pass you by.

⚫️ Or take Wallet. It has been available from the menu for almost all Telegram users for several years now, but do we have anyone among our readers who actually found TON through that button? We doubt it. If we are wrong and that was your case, tell us in the comments.

⚫️ A few months ago, even Pavel Durov could not find a better way to promote his own channel than placing a banner above every user’s chat list. But Gram Wallet is unlikely to get the same kind of campaign. Most likely, after launch, it will simply end up somewhere in the menu next to all the other features.

⚫️ In the end, Gram Wallet will almost certainly get media coverage and stay in trends on X for a few days. But for the broader audience, the story may end there.
