❗️US reportedly accepts inclusion of resistance factions in Iraq’s new government

Washington has reportedly given tacit approval for Iraq’s new government to include factions aligned with Iran, according to diplomatic sources cited by AFP. One source said Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi secured US approval during a September visit to New York for the UN General Assembly, where he met US President Donald Trump.

The main point of contention was reportedly the appointment of Laith al-Khazali, the brother of Qays al-Khazali, who leads Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq, a group designated by Washington as a terrorist organization.

According to the AFP source, US approval followed assurances from al-Zaidi that his government would pursue disarmament plans and prevent these factions from attacking US interests in Iraq.
