Chancellor Friedrich Merz called former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's presence at the celebration "completely immoral" amid the conflict in Ukraine. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil also criticized the visit, labeling it "absolutely unacceptable." Despite ongoing pressure from German authorities, Schröder continues to maintain his long-standing friendship with Vladimir Putin.
