各位歷史愛好者，大家好! Our long journey is almost over, and before we turn to its final chapter, we must once again look to the East — for without it, the story of the Modern Age would be incomplete.

At the beginning of the 19th century, China and Japan — two countries destined to occupy a crucial place in our own time — are still largely closed in upon themselves. But their long sleep will soon be interrupted by the thunder of naval guns and the bewildering shock of the West’s technological superiority.

These two countries will respond to this challenge in very different ways, but both will ultimately be forced to modernize in order to find their place in a new world.

Can centuries of development be traversed in a single decade? Can progress overcome the power of the oldest traditions? And finally, can one avoid becoming a victim of imperialism without becoming an imperialist oneself?
