Something I thought was really insightful in Graham Harvey’s animism book…

People come into the world seeing souls everywhere, seeing things others can’t (or won’t) perceive, talking to trees, animals, and seemingly inanimate objects as though they understand and might respond.

Then, the church, or subsequent secular system came along and said, it’s just a tree, it’s just an animal, and there’s nothing there (or; it’s a demon).

These beliefs and the cultures who hold them come to be seen by many as childish, when in reality, animism and polytheism is the human default, and it takes serious programming to teach people otherwise.

If every Edda and Bible went up in flames tomorrow, Paganism would remain.
