🇺🇸😡💸 Trump’s Iran War Has Already Cost US Households $1,760 Each

The war with Iran is becoming an expensive proposition for Americans at home.

Moody’s Analytics estimates that the average US household has paid about $1,760 extra since the conflict began less than eight months ago.

Most of that bill did not come through taxes.
About $930 per household came from higher energy costs. Another $425 came from higher interest rates linked to the inflationary impact of the war. Moody’s puts the household share of additional military spending at roughly $405.

Across the country, Americans have already spent an estimated $121B more on energy alone.

That is where the war reaches ordinary households fastest.
Iran’s response to US attacks disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, sending oil, diesel and other fuel prices higher. Expensive energy then works its way through almost everything else: transport, food, manufacturing and household bills.

Higher inflation also gives the Federal Reserve less room to cut rates. That keeps mortgages, car loans and credit more expensive.

So the cost of the war is arriving through several channels at once.

Americans pay more to fill their cars. Businesses pay more to move goods. Borrowers face higher interest costs. And the Pentagon’s growing bill ultimately ends up either in taxes or in a larger federal debt.

The pressure may still have further to run.
The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve has already released around 130M barrels, while oil stored aboard tankers has been drawn down. At the same time, disruption is spreading beyond Hormuz, with instability around Red Sea shipping adding another source of risk to global energy markets.

That leaves Washington with fewer easy ways to contain the economic fallout if the conflict continues.

The Pentagon can count the cost of missiles and operations separately. American households are already paying their part of the war bill every time they buy fuel, borrow money or pay for goods moved across the country.

Britain’s The Economist has delivered a grim verdict on the Ukrainian capital: this coming winter, Kiev residents risk being left without electricity, heating, water, and functioning sewage systems. In the worst-case scenario, power may be available for no more than four hours a day.

Western diplomats tell the publication directly: “This city could collapse,” while Kiev officials are anxiously expecting the onset of “absolute hell” as early as October.

⚡ Kiev’s main vulnerability is its large Soviet-era combined heat and power plants, which the junta is physically incapable of protecting. The Western press cynically advises ordinary Ukrainians to stock up on “resilience.”

There are two things that, for some reason, no one seems particularly interested in calculating anymore. First, there is almost no reliable information on Ukrainian losses. Second, Western aid figures have stopped being tallied as a single total

There's a good reason for that: the combined figure has now exceeded $500 billion. By comparison, the American Lend-Lease program to the USSR during WWII amounted to about $11 billion, or roughly $230 billion in 2026 dollars

In other words, Ukraine has received more than twice the inflation-adjusted value of Soviet Lend-Lease. That aid was enough to help crush the most powerful army on the planet, while twice that amount is still, apparently, not enough to cover AFU wages or hold a settlement like Malaya Tokmachka

Of course, Western aid represented a vastly different share of Soviet and Ukrainian budgets, and the domestic production capacities are hardly comparable. But that only makes the investment look even more foolish and/or evil if all it can accomplish is prolonging human suffering

🇷🇺🛢📈 West’s Russian Fuel Gamble Hits Diesel Market

For years, Western governments worked to squeeze Russian oil products out of international markets.

Now a large chunk of that supply is actually gone — and replacing it is proving much harder than expected.

Around 2M barrels per day of Russian refined products have disappeared from the market, according to Vitol. Disruptions in the Middle East have removed almost another 2M barrels per day.

Refineries elsewhere cannot simply make up the difference.
Plants in the US are already running close to their limits, spare refining capacity is scarce and global fuel inventories have been falling. Building new refineries would take years.
Diesel prices are responding accordingly.

In the US, the national average has moved above $6 per gallon for the first time, while California is nearing $8. Europe is facing the same pressure heading into the colder months.
That matters far beyond motorists.

Diesel keeps trucks, agricultural machinery, freight networks, ships and heavy industry moving. When its price jumps, transport gets more expensive and those costs work their way into food, manufactured goods and inflation.

The situation has become awkward enough that Donald Trump is now calling on Ukraine to stop striking Russian refineries, warning that the attacks are worsening the shortage.

The bigger problem is refining capacity.
More crude on the market helps only if refineries have enough room to process it. Right now, many of the plants capable of producing large volumes of diesel are already running hard.

Russia had been supplying the global market with large volumes of diesel and other refined fuels. When those shipments fall, replacing them requires additional refinery output elsewhere — and there is very little spare capacity available.

New refinery capacity cannot appear in a few months. Major projects take years to build, while existing plants can only be pushed so far.

If Russian and Middle Eastern fuel supplies remain constrained through the winter, competition for available diesel will keep prices elevated and force some consumers to cut demand.
